Western Student

Heading

The Division of Indigenous Leadership at Western Sydney University plays a central role in advancing Indigenous excellence through education, research, employment, and community engagement. Its work is guided by a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, cultural integrity, and leadership. Through transformative initiatives and strategic partnerships, the Division supports the University’s goal of being a national leader in Indigenous education and inclusion.

A key function of the Division is to drive initiatives that empower Indigenous students, staff, and communities. This includes leadership of the Ignite Indigenous Traineeship Program, which provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants with paid, vocational pathways into the University’s operations. The program offers professional experience and skills development while fostering a culturally safe and supportive workplace environment.

The Division also oversees the Indigenous Centre of Excellence—a purpose-built hub for cultural celebration, education, and community connection. The Centre plays a vital role in promoting Indigenous knowledge, language, and identity, offering a space where students, staff, and community members can engage in cultural exchange, learning, and collaboration. It serves as a beacon for Indigenous achievement and aspiration across the University and the wider community.

In the area of Indigenous Education, the Division supports initiatives that embed Indigenous perspectives across the curriculum and promote culturally respectful learning environments. These efforts include tailored academic programs, student support services, and community-based partnerships that strengthen educational outcomes and foster reconciliation. By integrating Indigenous ways of knowing and doing into learning and teaching, the University ensures that students and staff contribute meaningfully to advancing Indigenous futures.

The Division also leads Indigenous Employment strategies across the University, working to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation through targeted recruitment, professional development, and inclusive workplace practices. The Ignite Program and other initiatives create accessible entry points to employment and help build long-term career pathways for Indigenous staff. These efforts are supported by mechanisms such as the Indigenous Elders Advisory Committee and Yarning Circles, which contribute to cultural safety and ensure Indigenous voices are embedded in decision-making.
